The history of Arita, Hasami porcelain
Arita porcelain began in 1616 when the potter Ri Sampei successfully produced porcelain in Arita, Saga Prefecture. Initially, it focused on blue and white porcelain and was exported to Europe. Today, Arita ware maintains its traditional techniques while collaborating with designers, and it is internationally recognized as high-end gifts and interior goods. On the other hand, Hasami porcelain developed around the same time in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, as practical pottery for the common people. Now, its simple and modern designs are gaining attention and popularity both domestically and internationally.
