Tadayoshi Nagasaki
Tanshin Kiln was founded in 1980. The second generation, Tadayoshi Nagasaki, together with his craftsmen, has inherited the style and techniques of the kiln, focusing on Suishobori developed by the first generation, Yuzuru Nagasaki.
Until then, there was only cloudy “Hotaruyaki” in the world. After repeated trial and error, Tanshin Kiln has perfected a new type of “Hotaru-yaki” that is colorless, transparent, and shines beautifully.
Incidentally, “Hotaruyaki” is generally defined as
pottery made by a technique in which transparent carvings are made into the pottery and glaze is embedded in the carvings, allowing light to pass through the translucent glaze.
This colorless, transparent “Hotaruyaki” is different from such a technique, and is named “Suishobori” because it shines beautifully like crystal. (*Suishobori is a registered trademark.)
The material that makes it transparent is made by blending several materials in-house. The secret recipe passed down from the previous generation is still a special one known only to the second generation, Tadayoshi.
Suishobori are made from Amakusa ceramic clay. It is the next lowest impurity clay after the highest quality clay used mainly by living national treasures. The reason for using this clay is that it can be made delicately thin, produces the desired whiteness, and has little distortion
or distortion.
Awards and Exhibitions
Craftsmen carve holes by hand in this high-quality white porcelain material one by one. After unglazed, special clay is filled in and baked twice at a high temperature of 1,300°C to produce a crystal-like luminosity and transparency. Since it takes more time and effort than other ceramics, the production volume is small.
Tanshin Kiln is making porcelain that suits modern lifestyles while preserving the style and techniques of the kiln. Mr. Nagasaki says that the best thing about Suishobori is that he can put his heart and soul into his handiwork.
